New Hampshire is different from most states. Technically, you don’t need to have insurance, but there are exceptions to this rule. Regardless, it’s always a good idea to stay within reach. Do you need car insurance in New Hampshire?

New Hampshire’s official motto is “Live for free or die.” With this motto, it is surprising that New Hampshire does not require everyone to have car insurance. That being said, if you don’t take out insurance, you’ll have to prove that you have enough money to meet the financial liability requirements for a motor vehicle in New Hampshire.

Without insurance in the event of an accident, you are still required to pay the costs of personal injury or damage to property. A claim may be brought against you and you may be required to pay for damages. Even if you are not guilty of an accident, payment for defense in court adds up. New Hampshire car insurance will protect you against such situations.

According to Valuepenguin.com, if you don’t pay the other party the cost of the accident, your license may be suspended. Without insurance, you are responsible for repairing your own car. You will have to pay for the loan out of your pocket, also if you have to use it. Of course, it is in your best interest to cover you with insurance so that you don’t have to pay out of pocket.

Exceptions to this rule

There are, however, exceptions to this rule, and the state requires drivers from the following groups to provide proof of insurance:

  • Drivers who have been convicted of DWI. In the event of the first offense, the driver must provide proof of insurance for three years from the date of conviction. For subsequent offenses, they will be required to show proof of insurance for a longer period, depending on the number of convictions.
  • People convicted of certain crimes, such as leaving the scene of an accident or a second conviction for reckless action. In other cases, drivers may be required to show proof of insurance for a limited period in order to retain their driving license or, if it has already been suspended, to recover it.
  • Drivers who were found guilty of car accidents and who did not have insurance at the time. They are required to provide proof of insurance for three years after the disaster. This period may be extended in some cases – for example, if the person involved in the accident receives a judgment against the driver.

If you decide to purchase liability insurance in the state of New Hampshire, the law also requires you to buy a medical payment covering at least $ 1,000 (which covers medical expenses after an accident regardless of who caused the disaster). Revised Statute in New Hampshire Title XXI section 264: 16 contains some key information you should know about MedPay in New Hampshire:

  • MedPay insurance in New Hampshire applies only to medical expenses incurred within three years of the date of the car accident.
  • After an accident, the policyholder can apply for reimbursement of medical expenses under MedPay insurance, health insurance or both, but the policyholder cannot receive a “double payment” for the same medical expenses.
  • MedPay insurance is not required for most commercial car insurance policies.

Although car insurance in New Hampshire is not required, insurance is always in your best interest. You never know what can happen, and car insurance will save you from a catastrophic debt. The minimum necessary to protect you is civil liability insurance, but it’s also best to have collision or comprehensive protection.
